Do you remember at the start of the new year when I talked about my 2012 intention? My intention was to simplify. That intention still remains, but I am just now starting to find out how important my plan for the year really was and is.

First off, yesterday I deactivated my twitter and facebook accounts. I'm predicting twitter will be gone for good, but I may bring facebook back in time, just in order to peek at pictures of my niece and nephew who live out of town, but for now I need to be free from those devices, I need to eliminate more and more activities from my life that I can turn to in order to waste time or to distract myself. Time is such a valuable thing and I really should be appreciating the time I do have. Rather than just digging in, doing the crappy stuff, and putting it behind me, I will waste time on meaningless activities in order to avoid the crappy. As you can imagine, at the end of the day this just leaves me not having accomplished much and not feeling all that wonderful about things. For instance, I have one class that I absolutely cannot stand. The topic is not really of interest to me and I find the assignments aggravate me to no end, but what does avoiding and distracting get me? Nothing. The work still has to be done, the class will have to be completed, there is no getting out if I want to graduate in may, which I do. And really, once I just dig in and make myself do it, it really is not a big deal. I just let the pressure build up and get myself so worked up that I let it become bigger than it is. As you probably see by now, this is a common problem of mine, but one I am constantly working on.

So, I simplify. I will continue to remove distractions, but I will also put my rewards systems back into place. Not rewards of purchases, but rewards of time, time to spend on watercolors and sewing. Today the plan is to finish up all of my assignments due by today and to cozy up with my watercolors and brushes into the evening. Life is not very much fun to live if we don't make time for the things we enjoy most, so that's the plan, completing required tasks efficiently and then focusing on the things that matter most of all.

Up, Down, and All Around

UP: Today I went to an orientation of sorts so I can begin volunteering with developmentally disabled kids for one of my courses. I am looking forward to the growth and the learning I will be exposed to through this opportunity.

UP: All of my internship paperwork is completed and we are still on the right track. Hopefully only a couple of more things and I will really be able to get started.

UP: I have been on a savory foods kick lately and not really in the mood for sweets, so the fact that my cupcakes didn't turn out last night is not as upsetting as it normally would be.

UP: The weather around here has been amazing. Sunny skies and warm temperatures for the past few days.

DOWN: It is winter, so we really shouldn't be having such mild weather. I do worry a bit about the larger implications of all this.

UP: Secret love notes left for me to find when I open up my computer. That fella is a keeper.

UP: I love that we have clean drinkable water at the ready. This allows me to keep my jug filled with ice water all day long and I know this isn't the case for everyone. I am very thankful for this clean water.

DOWN: The motivation for school work is still kinda scarce and I am not thinking that is going to change until graduation in May. So long as I am aware of it and keep plugging along anyway than this doesn't have to be a problem.

UP: Tomorrow is Friday and that means it is almost weekend time, which means two full days of fun, fella lovin', and friends. These little two day breaks at the end of the week are a pretty wonderful thing.

Just Breathe

Luckily, with a good dose of crying, some hugs and encouragement, an evening stroll, and some planning ahead for the next day, I made it through yesterday and was able to start fresh this morning.

I really do become overwhelmed so easily and have always been an emotional lady, but I think I need to step back and realize that most of the overwhelming stuff does not need to be that way. At the end of the day we are all just people. Just skin, bones, blood, and feelings and all of the other things that clutter up our lives are not as important as just loving ourselves and the other humans around us just as much as we can, while doing our best to let the other things fade away.

This is not an easy task because we also have brains and a tendency to stress, worry, and over-think at times, but I am going to try harder to just be a good human and love the other good humans and to see what comes of that.

The school work, the internships, the wedding planning, the barking dogs, all of these things can stress me out or I can handle them one at a time and not put pressure on myself to have things a certain way or to have to be perfect, but just to do them with love and with care and leave it at that.

I will do my best to breathe. To just breathe and move forward and to enjoy all of the wonderful things that are coming my way if I would allow myself to see them.

And if you hear me getting stressy feel free to remind me to be a good little Breathing Apparatus and to chill out.

Struggling

This week is off to a completely rough start. This semester is serving me up a bigger meal than I care for, but one I can handle, yet this week, this week I am unable to harness the needed motivation, energy, and alertness to make much progress on anything.

I think I have mentioned before that all of classes are online this semester due to them only being offered in that format. This is a good thing for when I am feeling sick and run-down as I am today, but it is also really overwhelming and labor-intensive. Plus, as you can imagine, finding the right structure and plan to get everything done efficiently is a struggle.

Throw on top of that not being able to find wedding/reception sites that fit our budget and needs, working out the last kinks of getting my internship set-up and rolling, getting my site secured for necessary service hours for one of my classes, along with some general money, life, and basic human worries....and I am feeling overwhelmed.

I am trying my best to stop, breathe, and just know that I will get it done and everything will work out, but this week is providing me with quite the lack of necessary qualities for that kind of behavior.

I don't know what I am looking for in sharing this, for advice is always good, but will it help break through these walls of exhaustion and stress? I am open to any if you think it could, but I guess more than anything I just needed to get this out, to say I am having a pretty rough week and maybe just putting that out there will help me move past it. I'm hoping a long evening stroll with the pooches and my guy, along with a good nights sleep, will also work a little magic.

If nothing else, there is always tomorrow, there is always next week, there is always an opportunity to start fresh and push forward.

Happy Birthday May May

Friday marked the 7th birthday of my oldest furry kiddo, Miss Lilly May.

Although I have talked about her issues and how she can stress me out, she and I have been through a lifetime together in these last seven years.

I adopted her soon after turning 20 years old and I am quickly coming up on 27, those are some pretty crazy years to get through, and with all of her unique quirks, along with my own, we somehow made it through it all together.

Always had the cutest little puppy belly.

She continues with this look to this day. Especially when tired or annoyed.

In our last bedroom together before moving in with E.

We have lived in four homes together. She has been there to comfort me through the loss of my grandma and more recently the loss of my father. She makes me feel safe and secure on late-night walks. She is never upset to see me, in fact, she is always right at the door ready to greet me whether I am away for 10 minutes or 10 days.

So, even though she is getting to be an old lady, she will always be my baby, my sweet potato, my bear bear, my winky, my pumpkin butt.

Super Self Love: Coloring Inside Your Own Lines

I am sure you all have heard the phrase "color outside the lines", encouraging people to break away from the ordinary and to be unique, to not worry about fitting into somebody else's mold. While I think that is good advice, lately I have been following a different kind of advice and telling myself to Color Inside Your Own Lines.

What does that mean, Color Inside Your Own Lines? For me it means not worrying about being different for the sake of being different. It means being okay with doing something I love even if it is not trendy at the moment, or alternatively, even if it is. Maybe most importantly to me it means deciding on a few things I love most and giving them all I have, coloring inside my own lines.
Not long ago I found myself overwhelmed. While our technologically oriented society is wonderful in that it connects us all to each other in an insanely efficient way, it can also lead to overstimulation and to feeling like you need to have your hand in each pie, trying anything and everything you come across. This is not always a bad thing, in fact it can be a great breeding ground for creativity, but it can also lead to feeling overwhelmed.

So, when I found myself overwhelmed I stopped.
I took time to focus and look inward.
When I looked closely my mind returned to the activities I have always enjoyed, writing and art (mainly drawing and photography). I decided I would color inside my own lines by giving more energy to each of those activities rather than trying to be a master of all, and it felt good. I will admit I lose focus and have to steer myself back in that direction from time to time, but when I feel overstimulated or overwhelmed I can now stop, take a breath, and re-focus on the activities that matter to me most, and I think that is an important lesson for me to learn. It isn't about breaking the molds or trying to stand out, but nurturing myself to be the best me that I know how and constantly growing in my own talents and abilities.
There is plenty of time to try something new in-between my old loves, but keeping my strengths in mind is important in nurturing my self-worth and self-confidence while approaching everything else. In this way, no matter how new adventures pan out or what I find when I travel outside my lines, I know I have strengths and talents to return to and find comfort in.

Ups and Downs

UP: My tooth broke a month or two ago and I finally had it fixed on Tuesday. I feel so much better for it.

DOWN: I don't have dental insurance so my dental relief was quite pricey.

UP: We are getting closer and closer to planning where and when our wedding will be. More on all that once we decide and pin things down a little more.

DOWN: These online classes I am taking are really quite a pain in my butt.

UP: Once I finish this semester I will be able to graduate and all of the pains in my butt will be worth it.

DOWN: Random weather and temperature changes resulting in a consistently muddy backyard. Mud + Dogs is not a fun time for mama bear.

UP: Lilly May dog turns 7 tomorrow. I survived seven years of raising that crazy fur-butt and succeeded in keeping her alive. Three cheers for us.

DOWN: Even after seven years L-May still has so many issues. Here's hoping old age helps calm her down a bit more. I can only hope!

UP: My own birthday is exactly one month after L-May's and I will be 27. 27 is going to be a pretty big and amazing year, just you wait and see.

UP: Tuesday afternoon I broke out a space heater to drag around the house with me, that was my best idea of the week.

Eloise Margaret - One Year Old

My little niece Eloise Margaret turned one year old in early January and a couple weeks ago my Mom and I made a little journey together to celebrate.

While the day they move back to St. Louis cannot come soon enough, I am thankful for being able to see them as often as I do.

What you need to know about little Eloise is she is serious. She likes to laugh and play, but you will often catch her examining your face, the room, or various little objects she gathers on her own little journeys around the house.

She has a fiery spirit that we all love. She will most likely be opinionated and strong-willed, in fact she already is, but these characteristics will be beneficial to her becoming a strong woman. But, let us not jump too far ahead, she is only a year old after all, and her one year has treated her pretty well in the adorable-ness department.

She celebrated her first birthday with a small family gathering and her first bites of organic raspberry ice cream and whole wheat cupcakes. She seemed to enjoy tasting these new-to-her sweet treats, but quickly returned to her savory lunch. I guess she takes after her dad in that department, choosing savory over sweet, at least so far, although she did especially like the ice cream, something her Mama has been known to eat for breakfast from time to time.

Once again, I love being an aunt and am thankful for having little Eloise and my other little loves in my life. They bring me so much joy and of course give fuel to the baby fever fire.

Monthly Date: Painted Pottery and Pizza

Early on in January I had the idea of E and I planning monthly dates with each other. While I love hanging out at home together, watching netflix, playing games, working on our home, I felt like we needed to mix things up.

So, I had us each make a list of six activities we would like to do with the other person, allowing us each to pick one to enjoy each month. This way we will each do things with the other person that we would not normally do on our own, while also having a wonderful time spending the day together.

This month I picked Painting Pottery and Pizza as our date.

We had a lot of fun at The Painted Zebra where we each picked out an unfinished piece of ceramic to paint. I chose a cardinal bank and E picked out a dinner plate to do in his fun style that I love so much.

They will dip them in a clear glaze and fire them, allowing us to pick them up tomorrow afternoon. It is always a lot of fun to see how ceramics turn out once the firing process is complete. I will be sure to share them once they make their way home.

We hope to make a complete dinner set of plates, bowls, and mugs over the years, along with other various pieces for our home. Using something we made ourselves allows us to remember the memory every time we use it, and since the memory is of a date together, that is definitely a good thing.

Oh, and for the pizza part we headed next-door to Pi Pizza for my favorite vegan pizza and for talking with my guy. It was great to have these hours of colorful paint and pizza to brighten up a rather cold January day.

Overworked Mind?

Last night I had a crazy-craze dream.

I was driving around in my car, you know, cruising along, no big deal, with a baby in my lap, oh and you know breastfeeding it as I went along.

This was my baby, which at least makes it a little less strange, and we were heading to buy a car seat because I was afraid of getting a ticket if anyone saw the baby bobbing around in my lap doing its thing. There was much hunching and ducking involved to hide our going-ons from curious onlookers.

I also decided we should get a couple diapers since it was wearing the same one as it had been wearing since it was born.

I am pretty sure I wouldn't be such a terrible mother, but if my dreams are anywhere near reality than we are going to have a problem in the next couple years.

Ups & Downs

UP: Internship interview went well and I should be starting soon.

DOWN: Had to have blood drawn with super gruff lady who had me fist my hand (usually they tell me NOT to do that) and proceeded to jam needle into my arm. Instant bruise and pain.

UP: Went by Target after those things and found a couple super clearance tops I can wear for my internship. Yay for looking like an adult, but not spending lots of money to do so.

DOWN: That blood thing. It really hurts dudes.

UP: E and I have fun plans to look at a possible wedding spot this weekend and to paint pottery. I love our time together.

DOWN: Crazy weather. Super crazy. Tornado sirens 2am on Tuesday morning, day before super warm, this Sunday supposed to be warm again. Super weird.

UP: Plans for Thai Takeout and board games with two of my favorite sister-friends tomorrow night. Much needed.

UP: Working on my time management and prioritizing to be able to do all things!

DOWN: May dog has a huge barking problem and it is one of my biggest daily sources of stress. I am working on this.

UP: Leroy and Jasper are pretty awesomely behaved most always and help balance out the crazy.

More Bits From About The House

The semester is in full swing which left me with a very full day of assignments, readings, and planning, but last night before bed I wandered around the house snapping little phone photos of some of my favorite things.

1. Little chalk keepers for our kitchen lists.

2. Doe trivet on the kitchen wall.

3. My favorite little bird above the fireplace.

4. My howdy owl cookie jar that holds goodies like larabars and fruit leathers.

5. Little vintage lamb for future kiddos room.

6. This cactus has traveled from home to home with me and is now growing larger straight out of the tip. Very cool to see.

7. Little chunk of the fridge. JD piglet, magnets, little niece birth announcement.

8. Ceramic dog that was my dads and has been around as long as I can remember. I was so glad to rescue this from his property after he passed away and will never let it go, passing it on to my own kiddos, even if it has a couple more glue jobs through the years.

I hope everyone is having a lovely week. I for one cannot believe it is nearly Thursday already.

Tomorrow I finally get to go to my internship interview and I hope it all goes well so I can get started soon and know I will be able to graduate in May.

Whatever it takes, I am ready.

Doing Much of This

Changing Rhythm

So, I kind of went into a weird kind of mental state the past week or so and have not really known what to share here in this space, have not really had much that needed sharing, and isn't that what this is about, fulfilling a need in my own life while also connecting with others? I think so. I plan to be around here pretty often but feel myself switching rhythms and shifting gears, so I am going to ride that out and see what comes of it.

One big change is that my final semester of classes toward my Bachelors Degree begins tomorrow. While I know crazy times are to come while taking four classes, completing an internship (fingers crossed), planning a wedding, taking care of our zoo, planning the start of a skin-critter family, working on our home, and various other life stuff, I am more than ready to begin, more than ready to start this final chapter and to tick away at it just as quickly as I can.

We will take this one last night to kick back and relax before starting a new sort of structure, a new rhythm, and many new adventures.

Sticker Chart Update

A little over three weeks ago I started my big-girl sticker chart. Here is how it is looking these days:

So, to break it down, this is the percentage of time each task was completed:

Vitamins: 90%

Rox Box: 81%

Blog: 71%

Water: 67%

15 Minute Clean-Up: 48%

Journal: 44%

Walk Dogs: 43%

Creative: 38%

15+ Writing: 24%

Exercise: 9.5%

Wow, as you can see, almost every area needs some work.

I would like to see the percentages grow in the area of 15+ Writing, which means writing for personal projects outside of blogging and journaling. I would also really like to up those percentages on creative projects and exercise. It does not surprise me that exercise came in last place, but it really is something I need to make more of a priority.

Journaling was added on 5 days after the rest and I am happy with the 44% because before this chart I had let my personal journaling slide in a huge way, even though it is a really important thing for me, enabling me to clear my head and put things in perspective.

I am happy to say that my reward was waiting on my doorstep today:

Yep, I finally have a big girl camera bag and am so pleased that I took the time to "earn it" with my sticker chart.

The next reward will come when I reach a total of 250, for I want to up the challenge a bit each time.

A reward is not yet in place, and I admit that the days post-those-shown have not been so wonderful on the sticker-earning front. Looks like it is time to pick a reward and to work on upping those percentages, don't you think?

Little Bits

Sometimes I wander the house like a curious cat and just take in my favorite little bits, like these:

One of mine is that little vintage feathered bird on the branches. The branches are connected to a memory and the bird draws me to them and brings me a smile every day, from where it sits on our mantel.

Nursery Dreaming: Befores

So you know how I mentioned on Friday that I had THE Fever? Well, since we have made it clear we have a desire for a little bambino of our own, we figure we should get started on making the junk room into a usable space.

You see, there is a lot to do to make that happen:

Walking into the room you can see the damaged wood flooring and your first peek at our piles of randomness.

We will be removing the wood floor and replacing it so it will match right up with the wood in the rest of the house.

We will also need to remove that wood from the closet, you know, where E's brother used to have his pull-up bar.

Plus, we will need some closet doors or a stylish curtain.

Remove the junk, paint the walls, add some trim, and get my groove on with some nature-themed decoration.

Obviously way more involved and time-consuming than I just made it sound, but I always love a blank slate.

I will share our progress along the way and you know, let you know if we ever have a baby brewing up to actually live in this imagined nursery. You know, minor details.

She's got the Fever

I mean, it really is no secret, I have had the fever for a couple years now, probably more, but lately that fever is burning at an extremely high temperature.

The kind of fever that has me hoarding childrens clothes and planning out a nursery.

The kind of fever that has me spending $60 at a children's boutique for the baby that does not yet exist.

The kind of fever that has me willing to give up my much loved beauty sleep in order to care for a "skin-critter" as Eric calls 'em.

Yeah, that kind of fever, and I am definitely not looking for a cure.

And you know, that 30 gallon rubbermaid tote filled with thrifted kids clothes and labeled "Our Baby"? Well, what kind of person would I be if I were to pass up those corduroy overalls for just under a dollar? I mean THAT would be crazy, right...

My 2012 Intention

My intention, my word, my motivation for 2012 is "Simplify".

Choosing to make this a goal by having specific tasks to complete will not do it for me, for I need to simplify by relieving pressures from myself and relieving the expectation of perfection. Instead, I intend to approach as many days, situations, and ideas with that one word, Simplify, in mind.

I intend to also approach my days as fully aware of my true self as I can manage, choosing to do things in the way which is best for me, which reflects my own unique talents, and which makes me come alive, rather than trying to fit a mold, follow a trend, or please someone. Many of us may claim we do not do those things, myself included, but yet I often catch myself in the act of doing so and in this past year I fear I have done such a little more than I would have liked. This year I want to present myself as-is to the World and simplify my thoughts rather than worrying how I will be viewed. I know I will always question if my artwork, my writing, my creations are "good enough", for who is another story, but I will attempt not to question if I am good enough, because I am, we all are, and we deserve to believe that one simple thought.

Throughout the next year I will be sure to share some of my reflections on this special word and how this intention is serving me. Goals are wonderful, and I always have many of my own, but this year I will choose to look at the bigger picture.

Easing Back In

My absence has been longer than usual, but more needed than ever. This time of year it seems everyone is making goals, or resolutions for the fancier folks, but at this point I have not put any pen to paper or fingers to keys with any goals of my own in mind, none specifically for the new year at least.

Rather, I have been spending my time reading, spending time with family, antiquing with my fella, catching up with friends, and thinking, there is always plenty of thinking. Thinking about how I surround myself with objects that carry stories, a deer to remind me to simplify and a cow that reminds me of my late grandma, these objects each providing me with something I need. Thinking about simplifying by slowing down, taking each day as it comes, and remembering what is important to me, and maybe more importantly, what is not.

My jaw drops at realizing how much time I have spent clicking on blogs that at the end of the day hold no true value to me, not a value greater than the time I could be focusing on my own creativity and my own living. So, I have once again narrowed things down, trying to focus on my self, my thoughts, my own projects, while keeping my favorite blogs just a click away, the blogs where I feel the time trade-off to be beneficial, whether it be in being inspired, creating friendships, or any other number of things which enhance my life rather than detract from it. This practice comes highly recommended, even if it means your choosing to not visit me during your valuable free time. After all, there are animals to love, loaves of bread to be baked, and purple cows to be acquired.

Patience Donkey

The truth is, I am a tough gal to love. I come with benefits of loving deeply, but also with a wheelbarrow...no truck...no it is more like a shopping mall full of baggage. My baggage is not tidy enough to fit into one single parcel, it can be found in its different forms through each door that is entered and can be quite a heavy load to carry, yet this mall does not come equipped with carts, only hearts, and that is where things become tricky.

In this journey of love I am lucky to have a guy who can enter through those doors, make his purchases, find out they are not what he was expecting, yet love them anyway, a man who is patient when I am huffing and puffing away like an enraged bull and also when I am found slumped into a nook, crying like a scared child.

Unfortunate for him, it is hard for that child...that girl...this woman...me...to accept love, to fully embrace it and believe it, even when it is right in front of me. Luckily, that guy who can handle a charging bull can also handle working alongside me to figure it out. While not yet married, we have been together nearly four years, and the more time goes by the more doors are opened, but it is not a bad thing that this is happening. In fact, by opening these doors in each other we are realizing what it takes to love one another more deeply and to show it in a way that the other understands and is able to digest. We have begun our own sort of pre-marital work to make sure this partnership continues to grow and develop in a way that it can support the weight of our baggage rather than come crumbling down. We hope to put forth the work so we may become spouses, but also remain best friends as the years continue to tick away. We hope to build a relationship so strong that even when we face challenges and obstacles, we will be strong enough to surpass them hand in hand.

A Very Creative Christmas

Christmas has come and gone and I think we did pretty well with keeping it low-key and low-stress.

We still have my siblings to celebrate with, but so far as the actual holiday, we kept it pretty mellow. Also, while gifts are not the object of most importance, the ones I received were so fitting for my love of being creative and crafty, and for that I am thankful.

E was so sweet in his gifting me a quality set of water color paints and a pair of hand-crafted earrings created by Daphne Olive. Her pieces are inspired by nature and so entirely beautiful.

His parents (the future in-laws) gifted me with a quilting book, a printmaking book, and a Bias Tape Maker, along with his grandmother gifting me with a generous gift card to a Jo-Anns. It looks like I have quite a bit of crafting and art-making to tend to, something I don't mind one bit. In fact, I am very thankful to have the time and ability to do so.

These kinds of gifts mean a lot to me as they will continue adding fuel to my creative fire and keep me heading down the path I want to be traveling.
Also, rather than standard gifts, my Mom is going to get tickets for me, E, and herself to see a theatre show together, another love of mine.

Of course, most importantly, we were all able to spend time together and with our families, which we did plenty of.

Now, if only we could figure out how to have 3-day weekends together every week.

Liquid Therapy

Today I partook in a dose of liquid therapy, but not the sort you may imagine, for today my boots took me to the river to be soothed and comforted in a way that only she is capable of.

With each lap against the shore the have-tos and clutter were pulled from the junk drawers of my mind and set afloat with the current. My worries were slowly washed away as the wind brought the rivers cool breathes to my cheeks and her murmurs to my ears. If for only a short time, on her bank, I found peace.

In all my life, nature is the only one who has always known how to work its way into my soul, to break down my walls, and to help me find peace.

Sculpture Park Adventures

This weekend was so much fun. For once I succeeded in having a relatively low-stress Christmas,

but we will talk about that later because today E took me on a wonderful artistic adventure to Laumeier Sculpture Park and I would like to share some photos.

We are lucky to live in a city with so many wonderful parks, museums, attractions, and places to view art. I definitely do not take the fact that most of them are free to visit for granted.

Somehow I had not managed to go to this particular park before, but E decided today would be the day, and for that I am thankful.

This was part of the area which an artist has created to cater to canines. We were not sure if dogs could come, but we will definitely be bringing Lilly May and Jasper next time. Over and over I kept going on about how Much L-May would love the place, so I know she needs to take a visit. The fact that it is such a dog friendly place is a huge bonus.

This piece is the remains of a tree covered with hammered aluminum. The texture is fantastic to feel and it is wonderful to know that even while the tree continues to rot away, the sculpture will remain.

The brains behind this adventure. We are working on falling even more in love with each passing day and have definitely succeeded in doing so this past week.

There were plaques here and there with some very fine quotes, this being one of them.

A sculpture park is such a nice change of pace from being inside museum walls. My love for museums will never fade away, but there is definitely something special about art you can interact with on a larger scale and I enjoyed experiencing more of that today.

Now the fella and I are lounging with bellies full of home-made vegan chicken and rice soup while rain pitter patters on the roof and a fire crackles in the corner. I will enjoy this rare moment of perfection before another dog wrestling match begins or someone vomits on the carpet.

Hey guys hey!
Roxy here to talk to you about my favorite thing about the holidays. My brother is so smart thinking up this idea.

Hands down, no question about it, my favorite part of this time of the year is that Mama and Papa always put up a tree just for me, with all sorts of toys on it for me to play with. I used to live outside so they must know I miss running through the pine trees. This tree is even better though because it is covered up with strings of bright things and all sorts of toys of different shapes and sizes for me to attack and knock around. Sometimes I can even get the entire tree to shake and move, but Mama doesn't seem to like that, even if she laughs while telling me to stop, such a hard one to read that mama.

Well, I need to get back to playing and making sure all these dogs are behaving themselves. It's hard work keeping them all in line, but somebody has to do it.

Holiday Time with Mama

Ugghhh...my annoying brother Jasper had some big plan that all of us kids should share our favorite part of the holidays with all of Mama's friends who live in the computer. It all seems kind of weird to me, but in my old age I'm starting to appreciate Mama more, so here I am. Don't get any crazy ideas that you'll be seeing me around here too often, crazy Jasper is the obnoxious one of the group, so I'll leave that to him.

So anyway, we're supposed to tell you about our favorite part of the holidays, right? Well, that's easy, my favorite thing about the holidays is extra time with Mom and Dad at home. This is my seventh year of Christmas and I'm over the toys and cookies. For me it's all about hanging out with my parents and seeing Grandma a little extra. Jasper is always stealing all the toys and Leroy likes to pig out on the cookies, but I know Mama always tucks some away for me, so while they are busy acting like fools I am soaking up extra time with Mom. Shows what they now.

Are you wise like me in realizing family is most important?
Mama tries to keep that in mind, but I see her running around trying to make sure everyone else is happy, so I'll keep trying to teach her.

Mmmm Holiday Treats For Me

Hello internet people. I usually like to keep to myself, but my brother Jasper is quite the social guy and somehow convinced me we should hijack Mama's blog to talk about the holidays. Since it has to do with Mama I agreed, but this is the only time I plan on listening to my big lug of a brother.

I haven't lived with my family for long, just over a year actually. Before coming here I didn't know what Christmas was, but when we celebrated last year I saw what it was all about and have to say that I am a fan, but my very favorite part is the food! I know the internet is filled with food lovers. I see Mama looking at food-filled blogs all the time and wish I had a computer of my own to drool over the pictures all day too, but really I would rather be eating!

Last year I realized Mama has a tradition of baking trays and trays of cookies every Christmas. The best part is that they are all cookies for dogs! Can you believe it? How did I get so lucky to come to live at a cookie factory? She is busy cooking up a big batch right now, so I better run so I can watch for falling crumbs. I like to help out by keeping the floor clean of any scraps, you know, just trying to help where I can.

What is your favorite food? Do you like PB cookies too? They're my very favorite.

Woof Happy Holidays Woof

Hey guys, Jasper here. My Mama has been so busy being a Christmas elf, so I thought I would come and tell you all about my favorite part of the holidays.

TOYS!

That is my favorite part. I loooove to chew on things and like to keep a toy or two on me at all times.

The other day I heard a delivery man drop a box on the porch and later I caught a peak inside while Mama was opening it up.

I know I wasn't supposed to see, but there were so many toys in that big brown box!

Can you believe it? So many toys for me and my siblings.

Christmas morning can't come soon enough guys.

DIY: Felt Cat Ornaments

Some friends and I were going to do an ornament exchange, but due to late planning and scheduling conflicts we are going to start up that tradition next year. Although there was going to be no party, I was still looking forward to making an ornament or two, so I went ahead and did so for a couple of my close friends, who are also sisters, and cat fanatics.

We met up for a night of Thai food and games and I gladly gifted them a felt ornament each of their cats Pumpkin and Dori.

All you need to make some of your own is:

-Felt to match fur and accent colors

-Needle

-Thread and/or embroidery floss

-Batting or Polyfill for dimension (I used batting)

-Ribbon for hanging

-Paper and pen for template making

I simply made a template of a typical cat head and cut out two pieces of the main color for each cat.

After that I cut out triangles and circles for eyes and ears and hand-stitched them on the front panel, following up with stitching a little kitty-style mouth below each nose.

I also went ahead and stitched each cats name and the year on the back panel to make them more personal.

After that it is just a matter of putting a little batting or filling between the two layers and stitching them together using a matching or accenting thread, being sure to add a piece of folded ribbon between the ears before stitching that portion together.

These were really fun to make and the recipients loved them, stating that they are going to be hung up in their workplaces throughout the year.

Other options are adding buttons for eyes, adding whiskers, or stitching on stripes or patches for more multi-colored cats. I look forward to making more and mixing it up.

Sticker Charts: Sara Style

Last Wednesday I posted about needing help with balance, structure, and motivation.

With everyone's great advice in mind and with some help from E, I now have a Sara style sticker chart.

This thing is huge and will last me a little over six months.

Currently I have 8 things listed that I would like to attempt almost all days. Of course there are other things that fill my days, but by focusing on working these tasks into each one I think I will be able to get back on track to feeling happier and more productive, which will allow for me to do more of the bigger things that need doing.

Look at that thing, huge!

And of course, I will use a rewards system, but I am still figuring that part out.

For the first 100 stickers earned I think I will finally purchase the Jo Totes camera bag I have been eyeing up, and then choose more experience-related rewards from there on out, but those are yet to be determined.

Lately, with the holidays, I have been feeling pretty down. I am trying so hard to be in the holiday spirit, but am more in the mindset of just getting through. Efforts will be made to remedy this, but if no remedy comes, at least I will have my chart and my goals for becoming more awesome every day. That is something.

Winter DIY: Glitter Menagerie

Some time ago, I saw this diy over on Janee's blog and although glitter puts the fear in me, I knew I would have to give it a try.

Be forewarned, glitter never leaves. You will find glitter in your bathroom, on your front porch, and in other places you would never imagine being greeted by a shiny sparkle, but even with that knowledge in mind, I dove in to the glitter pot to create my own glitter menagerie.

I started with 5 animals from the dollar store and a couple of pots of glitter from Michaels.

Following the how-to from Janee I covered each one with glitter and modge podge, and did a second touch-up coat on those that needed it before letting them dry and sealing them with a clear spray.

I think the hippo and giraffe are my favorites, but I had fun making them all, despite the glitter explosion. I tried to be clean about it, but eventually I just gave in and let the glitter lead the way.

It was worth it to have this glittery crew who can come out to visit each year, bringing a little sparkle to the season.

Finding Balance and Structure: In Need of Tips

Now that the semester is complete, I am left with little structure to my days.

There are no classes or job to go to, but plenty of things that need doing.

My problem is finding balance and structure in these wide-open days. It seems the more structured responsibilities I have in place the better I use my free time and the more I get done overall, so when time is wide-open it is something I look forward to, but fear a bit at the same time. All of those things that need doing are easily pushed to the next day and then the next and, well, you get the picture.

My question to you is how do I find a balance in this free time?

Do you have any tips, e-books, or plans for structuring your time and responsibilities when you have no deadlines or time clocks helping you along the way?

Please share any and all tips because I would hate to see this next month go by without making use of all of this time.

I would very much appreciate your insight.

Room to Breathe

I am happy to say that as of 1:30 pm today my semester is complete. Technically it ends on Saturday, but all of my assignments are in and all of my scantrons have been bubbled in, so I consider myself a free lady until January 17th.

It is not all so simple, for I have an internship to gather documents and references for, and probably an interview for such as well, but I will definitely take time to celebrate my success of another completed semester throughout the next week or two. I have a lot to be proud of and through my celebration it is important for me to look back at my successes and what steps I took to get there. I look forward to that. Plus, now I will have much more time for my personal writing projects and I have plans to share more on those goals as well, goals to help me provide some accountability to myself for something I love, so that I may grow.

But tonight I will lounge on the couch with my guy with no homework or tests occupying my mind.

Winter DIY: Felt Snowflake Garland

I prefer my decorations to be seasonal rather than holiday-specific, so with Winter fast approaching, I knew it was time to tuck away the felt leaf garland and replace it with something a little more wintery.

I went for felt snowflake garland:

Determined to use things I already had on hand, I went about collecting the following:

-4 or 5 sheets each of white and grey felt

-Sharp scissors

-A black marker for tracing

-A snowflake shaped item for tracing as well as a larger circle for the backgrounds. I used THIS cookie image for my snowflake shape.

-Glue (I ended up using Elmers Glue All, but any felt appropriate glue will work)

-Yarn for stringing

-A large needle for stringing

The rest is pretty self-explanatory. Cut out your templates, trace your shapes and cut out your desired number. If you have large circle and snowflake cookie cutters you may be able to streamline this tracing process quite a bit.

Next, glue the snowflakes to the center of your circles.

Then, using your yarn and needle string them into garland.

I would recommend allowing your glue to fully dry before stringing. I allowed mine to sit overnight, but an hour or so would probably be enough.

Tada, pretty snowflake garland!

I hung a long strand across our front window and one in the opening between our kitchen and living room.

The snowflakes take a bit of time to cut out, but are well worth the effort to create a winter decoration that will last more than one season.

Strange.

Short hair, braces, favorite cargo pants, favorite flame flip flops. Track shirt and tan from all those activities.

A friend and I did Habitat for Humanity for fun. I think we got the idea from Seventh Heaven, really. Once a ginormous dildo was found while cleaning the sites, along with a dead dog in a bag, and stray appliances. Stay classy St. Louis.

And then there were the cones. And very pink shirts, apparently. There is something to be said for good clean fun, if you know what that something is let me know.

Insta-Thoughts: My Weekend

Only 9 more days folks. 216 or so hours until I can call this semester complete.

This weekend was mostly filled with this:

Researching and writing and mostly going crazy trying to get it all done.

Snack breaks of gluten free pb cookies and my first taste of soy nog. Still not sure how I feel about the stuff, but I have the rest of the carton to decide.

Not nearly enough time spent in our monster bed with these three goobers. Post-semester there will be way more of this.

Sunday I could not take my eyes off this handsome fella, I swear. So glad he is mine. I am I am.

Then it was right back to business, diving head first into my research project. That handsome guy even kept my mug full of hot tea to help me along. Told you that one is a keeper!

My Inch by Inch frame helped me along for the first time, reminding me to just start my project and to take it one sentence at a time. It gives good advice.

One Very Fine Feline

I think my little nugget cat is just the sweetest one you will ever meet. She has gorgeous green eyes and must have the softest, warmest, furriest belly in all of Missouri.

This time of year she can be found snuggling on warm blankets, in her little wicker house, or cuddled up with her chihuahua brother. When she is not doing any of the listed, she keeps busy trying to steal our food or wrestling with her canine friends. For a little nugget of a cat she does a pretty good job of standing her ground while staying adorable all the while.

Research! Chickens! What I am going to do about next semester and what I want to do after. I really should be trying to stay in the present, that could use some work.

Also, we could really use some straw to throw down in the backyard. These muddy paws are getting to be a bit much.

There will be no wedding talk today. Nope. Not going to have it. Today, I am focusing on school work and thinking about chickens. Yes, chickens.

Since my farm internship three years ago, I knew my life would not be complete if it did not involve chickens and other farm animals as a part of it.

Now, we are nowhere near ready to bring my dream to life, but I still get lost in day dreams about my feathered friends.

I long for a rooster too, for they are such majestic birds and a certain fella named Tecumseh will always live on in a certain crease of my heart, but if we stay in the city limits we will make do with a beautiful brood of hens, of which the city allows four per home.

So, while today I must focus on subjects such as Spanish and Literature, a part of my mind will be out throwing chicken scratch and rubbing feathered throats all the while.

Wrapping up the Semester

Fall break has officially ended, and the semester is back in full force, bringing plenty of work along with it.

It is hard for me to believe that there are only two weeks of classes remaining before finals are completed and my final research paper is turned in.

While I should be happy, and I am, the end of this semester also brings a little sadness with it in knowing these books and these subjects will be coming to a close, in an academic environment at least. Then, only one more semester to go for this degree.

While there is a little sadness, mostly I am happy and proud.

While I have not always put my very best self forward this semester, on most days she has been there and been committed.

Even when I was feeling sick or overwhelmed I still showed up and did the work, and I think that says a lot about how far I have come and how much I have grown from the person I used to be.

In just a couple of weeks, once everything is turned in and these books are sold back, I will celebrate.

Just me, a stack of personal reading, my notepad and pen, and a cup of coffee at my favorite spot.

No expectations, no pressure, and no deadlines.

I look forward to that.

Vegan Pumpkin Cheesecake

Thanksgiving is over and I know everyone is moving on to the next thing, but I am still trying to soak up the last bits of fall while I still can, so this pie is more than welcome in my home and belly.

I had a hankering for a pumpkin treat, but you see, I cannot stand traditional pumpkin pie and am a picky pie eater in general, but cheesecake + pumpkin is something I can stand behind.

Recipe (from chooseveg.com):

-12 oz. firm silken tofu, pureed
-8 oz. nondairy cream cheese (I used Tofutti)
-1 cup canned pumpkin
-1 cup granulated sugar
-3 Tbsp. flour
-1/2 tsp. ground ginger
-1/2 tsp. nutmeg
-1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
-1/8 tsp. salt
-1/4 tsp. baking soda
-1 prepared graham cracker crust

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Puree all the ingredients except the pie crust in a food processor and pour into the graham cracker crust. Bake at 350°F for 50 minutes. Allow to cool for 30 minutes, then cover with plastic wrap or the top of the pie container.

This pie comes together quickly, is super delicious, and tastes just as good the next day.

I am happy to have finally found a pie I can enjoy and will definitely be making it again.

Super Self Love

An important part of living a life of Super Self Love is taking criticisms, as well as praise, lightly.

Really, for me, taking praise lightly is even harder than the criticism side of things.

I grew up longing for someone to take pride in my accomplishment and give me assurance that I was really good at something, anything.

Though I was not aware of it at the time, this longing for praise was a big part of my life and has influenced me in some rather large ways.

I have a really hard time believing praise when I receive it, but it also rocks me to the center of my core.

In other ways, I am like a needy child who grabs onto this praise and tucks it away, letting it influence my life in a bigger way than it should.

Okay, so what is the problem with all this?

Why should I not let praise, or criticism, swallow me up in its arms?

It is not like I should not embrace praise or criticism at all, it is that they have their place.

They should be notches in my mind, acknowledgments of my achievements, and of other things which could use a little work, but they should not shake me in such an extreme way.

This all sounds kind of jumbled, and I am sure it is, but this is something I must continue to work on.

I must stay true to my passions, take others criticisms and praises with a grain of salt, and continue on this big beautiful journey called life.

Wedding Wednesday: Change-Up

Whew. Things are changing folks.

We no longer have a wedding day set, a location, or anything else.

We are starting over and working together to re-think how we want our wedding day to be, what is important to us, and to make a plan of how we will make it happen.

I suggested to Eric that we each make a list of what is really important to each of us with regards to our wedding. Mine looks a little something like this:

-My Mom, Siblings & Their Families, and close friends are there

-The ceremony is out in nature, preferably near water

-We have a cake

-Someone else makes the yummy vegan foods and serves them

-We have time for plenty of pictures and plenty of time to breathe and enjoy the day and the real meaning

That was pretty much the just of my list.

As you can see, there is not spot for DJ or dancing or everyone we've ever met having to be there.

Now, we weren't exactly going for that before, but with the way we were going, we would have had those things, even though they aren't important to us.

What really matters is that we are there, together, enjoying the moment with those we are closest to.

We both feel so much better and so relieved with these changes.

We need more time, we need more clarity, we need to stay true to us.

Many of the things I've shared on Wedding Wednesdays will still be a part of our day, and I'm looking forward to making decorations and planning details.

We may push the wedding back a year, we could do it sooner, maybe we'll be married on the moon. Well, not really, but what I'm saying is right now we dont' know and we like it that way.

We're going to plan this day together and every step of the way make sure we are doing what works for US.

I'm looking forward to being excited rather than overwhelmed.

This is a very good thing.

Christmas Meme

I saw this Christmas Meme over on irocksowhat last week and decided to join in. My sick mind needed some easy answers and a little fun.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?

Hot chocolate. I've never even tried egg nog or vegan nog either.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

We wrap stuff around here, but I haven't had a visit from Santa in many years.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?

I always do color, but like the simplicity of white too. I feel like it's more classy though, and I tend to go more with the fun and funky instead.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

I have before, but don't think I have any in the holiday box. Maybe we'll get some this year.

5. When do you put your decorations up?

After Thanksgiving. I love fall, so I want to keep my gourds, pumpkins, and leaves up and around as long as possible. Fall will always trump Christmas in my World.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish?

Green Bean Casserole - vegan style. Mmm.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child?

I liked when we were really young and lived in our first house, we would go to my now step-grandmas house and pack in like sardines to celebrate on Christmas Eve. It was always a nice time.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

I don't remember. I've always been one to question, but we grew up without much money so us kids were maybe convinced longer than others. Even when we thought Santa wasn't real, we weren't quite sure because we couldn't believe our family could afford things like new radios or bikes.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

Not anymore. When we were little, like #7, we would open extended family gifts on Christmas Eve.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?

We have a fake one with lights built in and we decorate it with each of our own old ornaments, and the new ones we've acquired together, along with some old decorations of my Grandmas.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?

This year I'm looking forward to it, but am usually pretty meh about it. Snow is great for sledding and snow-shoeing and all sorts of fun things, but if I have work/school/driving to do, not so much a fan.

12. Can you ice skate?

Probably? Can I do it well? Probably not. I think I've only been once or twice years ago.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

I like gifts! Last year E gave me a kitchen aid mixer, and that was pretty awesome!

Heartfelt and handmade is always much appreciated too!

14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?

Spending time with my family and having extra time with Eric on his extra days off.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?

I don't have one really. I like a good piece of chocolate cake, a gooey brownie, or a couple of awesome chocolate chip cookies.

Ohhh! My sister and mom make these gooey butter cake cookies that are really good too.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

I don't have one right now. Things have been changing for my family, so I think it's time that E and I make some of our own. I think that's something to look forward to!

17. What tops your tree?

A homemade star made from foam-core and a toilet paper tube.

18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving?

I love and hate both. I think giving gifts out of love is wonderful, but I dislike that gift giving can cause so much stress when connected with Christmas.

19. Candy Canes: Yuck or Yum?

Chocolate mint ones are pretty good.

20. Favorite Christmas show?

Show? I don't know, but I love the movie Elf. I think it's the all-time best Christmas movie.

21. Saddest Christmas Song?

There's some shoes for my mom song or something? That's a heart-warming but sad-ish one.

22. What is your favorite Christmas song?

I don't really have one. Ummmmm...Frosty The Snowman is fun.

5 Thoughts on Being Sick

1. Yawning really sucks when your throat is having an ache-fest. Stretching that sucker out is not comfortable.

2. Big bowls of soy ice cream to sooth that throat are wonderful.

3. Sharing a home with four furry critters makes for plenty of snuggle buddies for nap-times.

4. Having things to do and having a hard time getting them done kind of blows. Does my body not know that I am trying to be amazing and this sick business is not helping with that?

5. On the other hand, being able to guiltlessly lounge around watching movies and crappy tv is not the worst thing.

So many wishes that this crazy sickness will say adios sooner rather than later.

Film: Take Shelter

Today I took my fella to a surprise date.

You see, he always takes extra interest in storm and bomb shelters, so when I heard about this film from a friend, I had to get us to the theatre to see it.

The film is called Take Shelter and focuses on a man and his sudden interest in fixing up their tornado shelter while also adding in the angles of mental illness and small town living.

I would not say this film made my top 10 list, but it was not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon with my guy.

Plus, it was at the fancy pants boutique mall at a small Landmark Theatre which serves things like lattes, gelato, biscotti, vegan cookies, and cocktails at their concession stands.

Drinking a soy latte while watching a film in a theatre?

Yes please.

Super Self Love

One important aspect of Super Self Love is doing what is best for yourself even when you do not feel like doing it.

I am not the best example of this positive behavior, in fact, it is something I need to work on quite a bit, but when I go ahead and challenge myself to do something, even when I would rather be reading a book or lounging with the pooches, I can say that I am almost always glad I did.

Example: My friend and I signed up for a six week pre-paid yoga instruction. We go once a week for 90 minutes to be tortured by an older man with a bit of a unique personality. We only just finished week three, but other than week one, every time we have went, we have both dreaded it a bit and wished to be doing something else. We have struggled to get ourselves to walk through the studio doors, but when walking out, we have always felt so much better and been so glad that we sucked it up and went.

My yoga example is a bit of a larger thing, and we always know we will go since our sessions have already been paid for, but there are other times in everyday life when this attitude of challenging ourselves and doing the things we do not really feel like doing can be put into practice.

I am quite the homebody by nature, but I also crave social interaction and conversation. Often times when I am invited out to do something I want to find a reason to stay in. In the last year or so I have started to make more of an effort and started saying "yes" more to invites.
Do I have a blast every single time? No, sometimes I am even disappointed.
Am I almost always glad I went ahead and went? Yes, almost always, and the times that are less than amazing are learning experiences in their own right.

So this week I challenge myself, and you if you would like, to continue to say "yes" more and to challenge myself to put myself out into the world and to see what happens, while also trying to be positive about the whole ordeal.

Focusing Energy Where it Counts

I've been having a kind of rough time.

You see, I have dreams. I have hopes. I have visions of the life I want to live.

At the same time, something is holding me back. That something is myself.

I'm now at a place of re-evaluating my life, re-evaluating where I want it to go and what I want it to look like.

This is challenging.

There are tears and self-doubt and countless other emotional reactions and thoughts mixing together in my head.

I've always cut myself short.

I've never let myself really commit to anything.

I want to start, but I am afraid.

I think fear is a healthy thing and challenge helps us to continue to grow, but this practice is new to me.

Rather than running away, I want to try.

I want to see what I'm really capable of and prove to myself that I can be more than I am.

I'm not quite sure what my path will look like or what obstacles I will face along the way, but I know I want to face them.

I also know this is going to rock my life. I know that I need to focus my energy in new directions and retract it from others.

This isn't going to be easy. It will actually be quite hard, but I'm ready to see for myself.

Wedding Wednesday

If you've stopped by here more than once than you probably already know we have three dogs. If you didn't know, we have three dogs, three very odd, but wonderful, dogs.

We'd love to include our dogs in the wedding in some way, and I've been looking at some photos for inspiration:

Realistically, we could probably only have one or two. I think the stress would be too much on little Leroy, but Jasper would be a champ. Lilly May could also be awesome as a ring bearer with my nephew if she had a little training.

Ideally I'd love to have all of our furry kiddos there, but hopefully we can at least have Jasper participate in some way, and with a big fat bow tie to add a little fancy to his furry neck.

Insta-Thoughts

Just here to share some instagram inspired thoughts (aka insta-thoughts...I'm so not clever) for the week:

I finally did a quick decorating job on our pumpkins. Love bug love and critter love are constants in this house.

I've also been hanging out with Jasper boy a ton. He's been such a snuggle bug lately and quite a mama's boy. Although, don't be fooled, when E's around he tends to stick to his side.

Studying, lots, and thinking more about the GRE for more future studying times. Am I crazy? Yes.

Foods in the tum. I've been bad about the gluten free bit, but E's been mostly doing well and feeling better for it, and that's what really matters. I do plan on getting back on board though.

Last week my family hung out, ate, and drank lots of strange wine. Lots of niece and nephew hugs were soaked up.

My critters were all cute, as usual. I love all four of these little goobers so much.

And last of all, there's me. I've been going a bit crazy with school work, planning for next semester, and generally questioning all things as usual, but I don't think I would have it any other way, so mostly all is well.

Otter Box Makeover

When I upgraded to an iphone a few weeks back, we signed me up for the apple care plan due to my habit of having unfortunate phone accidents.

Either the lady just thought I was the best, or felt sorry for the future of my phone if it went unprotected, or maybe it was just a perk of signing up, but regardless, she gave me a free otter box case for my new phone.

Well folks, that's wonderful, I could use it, my phone will thank me, but the thing is, I'm not a big fan of the apple glaring out from the back of the phone.

Example:

What would be cuter? My little Leroy peeking out instead.

The process is pretty simple.

1. Trace around your photo using the rubber part of the case as your template.

2. Cut out your circle and trim so it fits inside the divet on the hard part of the case.

3. Cover with Paper glaze or Epoxy and allow to fully dry and harden (this may take a couple of days, see my note at the end of this post)

4. Return your phone to your newly beautified case and enjoy looking at something cute every time you use your phone.

Note: I did NOT allow my glaze to fully harden and cure so Leroy looked at me through a foggy cloud for a few days, but it's finally cleared up and looks normal again. Thank goodness. I think epoxy would be a good bet for this but use with caution due to it's fumes and such. Also, in case it's not clear, do not have your phone in the case while doing this, just to be safe. And of course, let me know if you try this out.

Giving Thanks for Family

Today I'll be celebrating Thanksgiving with my family. We may be a couple weeks early, but we'll all be in one place at one time, and that's a pretty rare thing.

This small group of people fills me with so much joy and love and whenever we're all together I laugh harder than any other times throughout the year.

Sure, things aren't perfect and there's plenty of bickering mixed in with the laughter, but it's us, and it's me, and it works.

Plus, I'll be seeing plenty of these two and I'll forever be thankful for having them in my life:

It's unfortunate but true that we sometimes get caught up in thinking we have no given purpose in the world, thinking that we aren't unique or special, but just an ordinary person with nothing extraordinary to offer.

The truth is, we are all extraordinary, but it's not always visible to us. Have you ever helped a lost animal or comforted a child? Have you ever helped clean up a river or bought a meal for a friend who needed a pick-me-up? Have you ever helped an elderly person with their yard work or sent a random note to cheer up someone's day? Have you ever thanked someone for the impact they've had on your life?

These actions can feel small and ordinary, but they are so powerful. If you weren't doing then, who would?

The power of a kind action or word is so often overlooked, but those words and actions have the power to change someones day, or outlook on life entirely.

I've experienced kindness that has caused me to shed tears at the fact that someone could be so kind and so loving without even knowing me at all and with nothing to gain.

I want to be more like those people more often.

I challenge myself, and you if you'd so desire, to share some of that kindness this week. You never know what kind of impact it can have on someone and all it takes on our part is tuning into our kindness and choosing to share it with those around us.

Maybe I'll bake someone a treat just because. Maybe I'll thank someone for the way they've influenced my life. Maybe I'll post a few notes through the mail or go pick up trash in a park.

There are so many options and so many ways to make the world a kinder place. I always feel most at balance with my life when I have a heart full of gratitude and showing kindness to others seems to help that gratitude grow.

DIY Leaf Garland

There have been leaf garland diys flying around the interwebs lately, and being the fall lover I am, I had to make a couple of my own to decorate our nest.

They are so simple to make with only a few basic supplies:

-Yarn

-Felt

-Scissors

-Needles

Using recycled felt I already had in my studio, I cut out one sheets worth each of brown, orange, red, and green and then strung them together with some thrifted rust red yarn.

I made one for our large front window, but I like this one hanging in the opening from our living room to kitchen even more.

There's nothing like a simple craft and some tiny gourds to welcome fall.

Wedding Wednesday

Last week I invited my lady friends to be in our wedding and they've all accepted.

We have also found our officiant, who is one of my dear friends.

I'm so excited to have these things in place and to know I'll have all of my favorite ladies by my side on our wedding day.

While all of the big things are coming into place, I've also started work on the little details.

In a desire to feel like I'm making progress, but without having the money to start on any big stuff, I found a little leaf project to keep me busy when I need something to take my mind off all of my school work.

For $15 (yay coupons!) I'll be able to make enough little paper leaves to scatter about each and every surface we feel needs a little nature-inspired charm.

It may seem silly to start something like this with 11 months to go, but I just see it as a way to balance out my to-do lists and make sure I have time to fit in all the little DIYs I have planned.

Any ideas for other things which are good to get done ahead of time?

We really have no set schedule or any sort of plan, but rather, are just winging it at this point, so any organization tips are more than welcome.

Living Life Inch by Inch

This weekend I created a little reminder for myself, a little something to look at that will remind me to slow down and to take my writing and my life one inch at a time.

This project was inspired by a wonderful female author by the name of Anne Lamott and her book on writing titled Bird by Bird.

She writes, "I go back to trying to breathe, slowly and calmly, and I finally notice the one-inch picture frame that I put on my desk to remind me of short assignments. It reminds me that all I have to do is write down as much as I can see through a one-inch picture frame. This is all I have to bite off for the time being."

So now I have my own little frame with a tiny 2" x 2" opening to remind me of this lesson. When I'm working on my personal creative writing and not sure where to start I remember to just write enough to fill a little one inch square and then another and eventually things will begin to flow, but even when they don't, at least I'm writing and working through the process, which is a very important practice in its own right.

As you may imagine, this lesson can be used throughout our lives regarding more things than writing. By just making small movements, by acting one inch at a time, large obstacles can be broken down and surmounted. By breaking out a one inch lens for when responsibilities become overwhelming, anything can be accomplished, even if it's bit by bit. I think that's something pretty important to remember.

Art and Framing

Recently, I've been acquiring a lot of artwork, but have been lacking in the money-to-frame-it department.

The good thing is I love to thrift and get crafty, so the money hurdle can be cleared in exchange for a little time and creativity.

When I go thrifting I'm always bound to pick up a frame or two. These frames usually cost around $1.21 and I don't think I've ever paid more than $2.

Add in a little scrap book or art papers and a can of white satin spray paint and I'm able to actually nicely frame my art collection in a way it will fit into my home and my finances.

For example:

I recently won a custom portrait giveaway from Corina through a giveaway on Janee's blog. Above you'll find her wonderful creation of E and I. We think it's so cute and love that she even put in the little detail of Eric's bracelet because it's something meaningful between us. Check out her shop here.

And you've probably already seen our custom family portrait from Rachele, but we've finally framed a print of it and can't wait to hang it up once our freshly painted walls dry. Check out Rachele's shop here. Her shop is on vacation, but I assure you it's worth the wait. I have more of her drawings in my home too, and can assure you she's a talented lady.

This last piece is a print of a painting by the insanely talented Caitlin of Hue and Hum. She creates gorgeous art and her husband is a talented musician. Plus, they have an adorable dog named Albus. How can you not want to support such an artist? (Find more work here). This "Silver Girl" print is hanging above my desk in my creative nook and will always have a place in my home and heart. I'm kind of attached.

So yes, cheap framing so you can spend more money on art.
